It’s always something special when someone releases their debut novel. I’ve read a few debuts, but never quite like this ARC, which I finished just before release day. It’s also interesting to read something different from my usual go-to books.
Pit Ponies is the name given to those newbies who enter the battles for the first time. These are rap battles, where youngsters compete against one another through their music.
We follow a group of youngsters who live and breathe rap. It’s in their blood as they compete and hone their skills. Soon, a group of teenagers become friends. Most are from deprived neighbourhoods where money is tight and drugs are rife, but the music brings them together.
Pit Ponies is very well written by someone who undoubtedly knows the scene. I must also mention what a wonderful cover it has. It perfectly represents the story.
If you enjoy rap music, strong characterisation and an engaging plot, give this one a try.

Maybe it wasn’t a good idea for Jamie to head to Mockton; at least, that’s what his head told him.
After a chance meeting with one of his heroes, his head might have been right.
Battle rap is no place for him, an anxious, pasty-faced loner, who appears less hip-hop than Mary Berry, but his passion for the sport pulls him there. His freestyled rebuttal taking a dangerous turn, that has the battle rap world repeating his name for all the wrong reasons, almost sinking his progression before it begins.
However, new friends bring opportunities that could give him a new life.
That’s if he can navigate a visit from the police, relationship problems he never dreamt he’d have, and one of the best battle rappers in the country calling for his downfall.
Can Jamie overcome his demons and repair his reputation? Will the community even allow it? Or will he end up in A&E with a broken face… or worse, locked up?
