My Review – Cut and Thirst by Margaret Attwood

This came in an email from Amazon with a few other books where I could choose one for free. I chose this because I like the author and I loved The Handmaid’s Tale. That means I didn’t read the description and so didn’t know what this story was about.

It started with three women, friends, who meet up regularly in one another’s house to drink gin and eat cheese. They were scheming to murder a group of men.

You know how you walk into a conversation and although listening, you don’t understand what they were talking about? Well, this book was like that. I had no idea who the women were or what was going on. It was only part way through that I finally understood why they were plotting.

Overall, I wasn’t entertained by this book and found it disappointing. I love short stories, but it was so in-depth I almost gave up. I expected better from the author. On checking, they are over 4K mixed reviews from one star right through to five. I can only manage to give it a three stars. Having said that, at thirty five pages long, it’s worth looking at.

  1. Atwood isn’t always an easy read, but she is always brilliant! I love most of her short stories but not all of them. And, although I have read all of her novels and loved them, The Handmaiden’s Tale is not my favourite.

      1. The Blind Assassin is my favourite but others are very good like Cat’s Eye and The Robber Bride. I have met her twice, very down to earth with a dry wit.
