National Pet Memorial Day

Most of us have had pets that we have loved and lost. On the 13^th September is National Pet Memorial Day, and it offers you a moment to think about a pet that loved. Many of us don’t like to go there because of the sadness it can bring us. So why not use this day to be proud of the pet and the happiness they gave you?

I’m proud of my Jodie. We bought her to help me with the grief of losing my parents. She was eight years old, and we had her until she passed aged sixteen.

Some people have special places in their gardens where their beloved animal is buried. Others have boxes with cremated remains and a small plaque. Where I live in Anglesey, there is a place called Penrhos Coastal Park, a two hundred acre park to explore. It has a bluebell wood, a flower meadow, woodlands, and red squirrels. It is a place to go bird watching, picnicking, and strolling the many pathways leading to beaches, and a hill that offers spectacular views towards Holyhead. It also has a pet cemetery.

I came across it by accident many years ago. Just where the path forks, and amongst the trees. It was most unexpected and completely delightful. The gravestones have been there since the eighties, and in 2019 two local volunteers gave it a facelift and cleaned the sixty memorials. People still stop to read the names today, and it remains a magical place to see.

Things you can do to celebrate this day:

• Write a poem.
• Write a special memory
• Donate something to charity in the name of your pet
• Plant something in your garden
• Make a donation to an animal charity writing a card with your pet’s name on it.
