When Maggie Taylor accepts a new job in Manchester, she is sure it is the right move for her family. The children have settled well although her husband, Duncan, doesn’t appear to be so convinced.
But nothing prepares her for the shock of coming home from work one night to find that Duncan has disappeared, leaving their young children alone. His phone is dead, and she has no idea where he has gone, or why. And then she discovers she’s not the only one looking for him.
When a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered and DCI Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate, Maggie realises how little she knows about Duncan’s past. Is he the man she loves? Who is he running from?
She doesn’t have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him. Because one thing has been made clear to Maggie – another woman will die soon, and it might be her.

I downloaded this book through Amazon as an Audible book as one of my free monthly credits. It sat on my app for a long while. I don’t remember downloading it, particularly. But when I was looking for something to listen to I saw the cover and that it was a thriller and thought, that will do!
I didn’t know what I was expecting, except it didn’t take long to realise I was listening to a great story. How did I know? Well, I couldn’t stop listening and at every opportunity, I grabbed my phone and fired up the app to listen to the voice of Lisa Coleman.
Rachel Abbot is a great story teller. There were lots of thriller type moments which would have the the reader or in my case, the listener, gripping the edge of the seat.
I loved the main detective Tom and his sidekick Becky. The story followed Maggie, whose husband had disappeared, Tom and his team were investigating a murder case and there was seemingly unrelated story lines. As with all good books, they all join up.
For mystery/suspense and psychological thriller lovers, this is a great read and I can’t recommend it enough.
And the Rest
I hadn’t realised this story it was set in Manchester. That was a bonus as I lived in the city for over 40 years. Pomona Dock and Heaton Park were mentioned and I knew both, as well as other places visited by the characters. The author also mentioned the canal deaths happening in Manchester that many believe a serial killer is at large.
On this blog, I mainly feature Indie author books with the odd mainstream. As this is a new year, I’ve decided not feature those authors with big publishers. Mainly because, as this book, it already has over a 1,000 reviews on Amazon. I am struggling to get past ten for my books, and author Indies have the same problem. Besides, these books don’t need help in promotion, it is all done for them.
However, I posted my review on Amazon and Goodreads, as I normally do. Goodreads then posted to Twitter to say I had read it. To my surprise, the author, Rachel Abbott replied thanked me and hoped I enjoyed it. I was surprised and delighted that such a big author would even bother to do that.
So it is for that reason only, I have decided to feature this book.
