I found this short story sitting in my BookFunnel app and began reading. At thirty-seven pages, it’s a quick and haunting read.
Sarah and Stephen return home to clear out their father’s house after his death. As you might expect, this brings back plenty of memories. The story is told from Sarah’s point of view, so we experience everything through her eyes.
There are twists, secrets and unexpected happenings that give this little tale an eerie atmosphere. Although I’d guessed some of what was happening, the full reveal showed there was much more to it than I’d imagined. That made it a riveting read.
Unfortunately, when I looked for it afterwards, I could find no trace of the story anywhere. I suspect I received it through the author’s newsletter, but it seems to be no longer available, which is a shame.
Having said that, JP McLean is a truly gifted writer. I’ve read her books, and if you’d like to try her work, I recommend starting with Secret Sky. It’s the first in a six-book series and remains one of my all-time favourite books. She also has other series that I’ve yet to explore.
If you enjoy a great story, I highly recommend JP McLean.
