National Clean Your Desk Day

I didn’t know there was such a thing, but there is. It falls on the second Monday in January.

“This day is an opportunity to begin your new year with a clean and organised workspace. Whether your desk is in a private or shared office, cubicle, home or a make-shift desk on the counter, having your workspace uncluttered and organised will help you work more efficiently. A clean workspace improves productivity and inspires us, too. It often gives us a sense of serenity.

If I was still at work, I would be inclined to do this a lot earlier than 11th January. I’d more likely to be back at work at the beginning of the month and wouldn’t you think this was a better time to tackle it? By the 11th you would be back to normal and busier, and it would be the last thing on your mind.

However, when I saw they had a day for this, it reminded me of my job before I retired. I loved a clean and tidy desk and yet my colleague was the total opposite. Her desk was always commented on. It was a tip, with bits of screwed up paper, a large pad with tea stains, numerous items including pens scattered about. I constantly commented how she could work like that. She would just give me a smile.

It wasn’t as if she lived like that. I had been to her house and it was lovely, so was her car. But her desk, she loved to have it messy, and I never found out why.

These days I have a home office. It’s where I do my writing and my crafting. I just can’t keep it tidy. I don’t know why. I don’t want it like that and now and again, I keep trying to sort it. But it is a far cry from my work desk.

This is a photo of my home desk. I’d be ashamed to show the before picture!

My laptop has since been replaced by a desk top. So that takes up space now.

Apart from crafting, it’s where I write my books, and you can see them here.
