My Review of Shadowed Skies by Haley Cavanagh

A magical world where hardships and love go hand in hand

Shadowed Skies by Hayley Cacanagh

Crime young adult fantasy

Rating: 4 Stars

225 pages

Step into a new world where some humans wings that have become an intrinsic part of their bodies.

I enjoyed the story of the two main characters, who each had chapters where we saw life from their point of view, Both of them were alone having lost their families to war or capture.

Delene escaped a lab and

was injured. River lost the companionship of his brother who had been taken by the same wicked doctor that Delene escaped from.

This was a dark story where horrific things happened, but told in such a way that wasn’t too graphic. Suitable for the intended audience.

I loved the bond between the two main characters. The way she was frightened of him to start off, but still stood up for herself. How River was wary of her but gradually grew to admire this strong minded girl.

There were exciting scenes as River rescues his Delene when she is captured. The authors masterful world building was brought it all to life with a vibrant supporting cast.

Overall, a great story of a post apocalyptic world that will entrance young readers.

My Favourite Bits

The icy metal bars chill my fingers. This sterile prison reeks of harsh cleaning products, barely masking the underlying sickness that permeates the Stockade. I’m in one of many cages lining the walls of this underground bunker the humans use for imprisoning my kind.

After a while, I’m high. My dad taught me never to look down, and I’m not about to. I’m a sweaty mess near the top, searching for a secure handhold. I touch something solid and slippery. I lose my balance, dangling over a hundred feet up, clinging to the rock.

“Where are we going?” “It’s a surprise. Hang on,” River mutters. Held close to his warm chest, my shivers don’t go unnoticed. Suddenly, we’re airborne. The sharp mountain wind tugs my hair as passing clouds chill our skin. I cling to River, comforted by his embrace. Cradled close, I feel safe and cherished. This is true freedom.
