A Funny Story – but not really

This happened in 1987, when it was acceptable to leave your child/baby in the a pram outside a shop whilst you went inside. Horrifying now, but back then everyone did it and they were quite safe- until they weren’t.

This story came to mind the other day when I thought a crying child was alone in a car. They weren’t.

I came out of the shop and my son who’d I’d left in the pushchair was gone. My heart went into my mouth and I suddenly couldn’t breathe as I frantically swivelled my head from side to side.

Then casually an older man approached me, “Excuse me,” he said. “but have you lost a little boy?”

‘Y-yes,” I gasped giving him my full attention.

“Well, it was windy and he blew over so I put him over there in a doorway.”

Stunned, I spun around and there was my precious son, safe and sound.

  1. My grandmother took my younger baby brother to the Post Office in the pram, parked it outside as you used to do and went in and did her business. It was only when she got home and made a cup of tea she realised the baby had not woken for his feed or cried at all. Hunting high and lo for the pram it suddenly hit her. she’d forgotten him and had left him outside the PO. Hurried back and he was still there, fast asleep. Nobody noticed. A small village I might add and in the 1960s. Could not do that today I am sure.
