Karen’s Chat about Writing and Junk Journals.

Yes it’s an odd combination for a subject. But it’s what I’m thinking about at the moment.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of writing. Just final edits of my books before publication. I’ve finished my time travel story, Time Lines, and now working on Play the Game. Yesterday, in my fiction world I was writing a party scene and a confrontation between two women. So, I’ve given you a sneak peak below.

When I’m not in my fiction world. One of the things I like to do is junk journaling. I do a lot of watching tutorials, or used to before I was deep in writing. Junk Journals are books that you can make yourself. They are similar to the scrap books you’d make as a child for a school projects.

There are many variations, and I just came across this flip through. I already keep a diary and I like collecting things from places I visit. This ‘personal journal’ combines those and makes fun to put together.

Maybe it will inspire you to give it a go, too.

From journals to stories.

This catty conversation is from Play the Game, Stella, the main character is talking to someone who thinks herself superior to Stella from the poor side of the street. But I think Stella’s stands up to her pretty well. What do you think ?

I swallowed the lump in my throat and gawped back at Annula. My mouth poised with words that wouldn’t come.

She reminded me of the stupid women at work who thought themselves superior. If I could handle them, I’m sure I could her.

“So, Annula. Are you with someone or did you come on your own?”

“I’m Martin’s girlfriend. Remember, we met you over there?” Her tone was condescending.

“So many people, it’s hard remembering them all.”

“Well, you’ll know Martin, of course?”

“No, should I?”

She gave me an incredulous look. “He’s only the best footballer on the planet”

I smiled sweetly. “Is he?”

Annula scowled. “Yes, and we’ve been together longer than you and Kelly.”

I could see the spite in her eyes and the way the corners of her mouth twitched. She moved her hair, long and straight, behind one ear. It also appeared to have been pressed with an iron. I smirked to myself recognising hair extensions woven between the strands.

“So, Kelly has mentioned me then?”

Annula stared back with heavily made-up eyes. Her beauty like her personality, fake.

“He has, that’s why I know you haven’t been together that long. Anyway, don’t you drink alcohol? It took you long enough to come up with an answer.”

“Only because we were rudely interrupted,” I snapped. “Not everyone needs alcohol to make them animated.”

She laughed, “Is that what you think I am, animated?”

“Hyper would be more appropriate, I think.”

Her brows drew together and I could see the dislike was mutual.

“Probably because I’m enjoying myself more than you by the sour look on your face. A lamb to the slaughter, that’s what you looked like when you walked in.” She giggled as if she’d made a funny joke.

I turned away. One of us would slap the other in a minute, and it wasn’t going to be her. Anyway, there was no point giving her fodder to feed off. What a cow!
