Introducing Andrew Hess
Where did the idea for the story come from?
I’ve wanted to come up with a Halloween inspired book for some time. I had a few horror novel ideas but I couldn’t put anything to paper. My agent challenged me to come up with a cozy mystery. I had already written so many from a detective point of view, I decided to go a different route this time, the wife of a sheriff who hears a scream where no one believes her.
Give a quote from the books, one that says little but speaks volumes.
“So, what are you getting dressed up as this year?”
“I’m grabbing a megaphone and my school sweatshirt. This way, I can be a loud, obnoxious coach.”
“How is that any different than you are sitting at home yelling at the T.V. during hockey and football season?”
“This time, I’ll have a megaphone
Give a short summary of what the book is about.

Serena’s persistence drives her to investigate on her own. Will she be able to uncover the truth, or will one scream unhinge her entire world?
What genre is it?
Cozy Mystery
How many pages is it?
188 pages
Why do you think the readers will want to read it?
I think it gives people an insight into the world of a reporter, it’s a mystery that isn’t just another detective series, and still be something realistic.

Excerpt
“This was the best night,” Izzy told me as she climbed under the covers. She patted the spot next to her. “Can you sit with me until I fall asleep?”
She didn’t need to ask twice. I grabbed a book and slid under the blanket to read my daughter a story. When we were done, Izzy curled against my body with her head resting on my shoulder. It was the best feeling in the world to cuddle with my baby girl, which made it impossible to slip my arm out the moment she fell asleep. It took a few minutes of carefully maneuvering my body until I was free.
My little angel.
I pulled the sheets tightly around Izzy, tucking her in to make sure she was nice and comfortable. I began to close the door to Izzy’s room, smile still on my face, when a scream pierced the air, immediately chasing away the serene moment.
The sound shook me to my core, causing me to run to the window.
It sounded like a woman, someone who was in pain or fearing for their life. I pried open the blinds, searching the empty street for the source. My eyes darted to each house, hoping to see what happened. There were no lights on in any of the homes across the street. No one had run outside, indicating where the scream came from.
Did anyone else hear her?
I listened for it again but was met with silence.
Was that her one and only attempt to call out for help?
I stood, frozen to the spot-staring; watching; waiting for something to happen. Every ounce of my curiosity urged me to go outside and investigate what had happened.
