The Imaginary Friend

Meredith promised they were gone. “They don’t have to be ‘gone,’ dear,” sighed her mother, slipping the backpack straps onto Meredith’s shoulders. “You’re a big girl now. Try to make friends at your new school.”

At lunch, Meredith approached a group of classmates. “You can’t sit with us,” said Caroline, nose turned up. 

Meredith gave up and sat in the corner, away from the chaos of the lunchroom. 

“I’ll sit with you,” said Tommy, appearing out of nowhere. He had a smile like stars. 

Meredith beamed, offering her apple to the vacant wall, “You know, making up friends is easier
