I Remember
by Kirsten Nain

I remember the first time I saw you. Sitting in the shade of the olive tree, deep in concentration, your hands darting across your pad as you sketched the scene in front of you.

‘Hey Marco, get your lazy ass from under that tree and come help papa with the fish.’

You looked in my direction, winked and turned your attention back to your sketch, ignoring your heckler.

I watch you now as you head to the shore. You look up and smile sadly as you untether your fishing boat.

Piled high in the corner, your sketch pads gather dust.
