I’m fairly sure I downloaded this book because it was free. I’ve never read any of L.T. Marshall’s books but as she is part of Pict Authors, I know her from there. For some reason I thought this was a short read and came across it on my Kindle when I was between books. I had a quick glance, and a quick read of the first page to see if I felt like reading it.
It caught me in the first paragraph, and immediately knew I would just keep going, whatever the length was. However, it was not a quick read. In fact, it was just the opposite at 656 pages. I’m not a fan of big books as a rule but it was too late to stop reading. There were times when I skipped over some paragraphs and other times when just devoured every word.
I went through several emotions reading this. How do write about a romance where two people just love each other without it becoming boring? Well, ask L.T. Marshall. Usually it is the chase, the conflict, and the getting together before the end of the book. Just Rose is so much more. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Rose at first. She wasn’t the feisty, strong female I was used to. In real life not everyone is strong and out going, so I let her talk to me.
When Rose can’t deal with a situation, especially when it involved the gorgeous Rob, she had a melt down of tears. There were lots of tear tantrums in the story and after a while I got used to that side of her character.
After inheriting a pretty little cottage from her Aunt, Rose seemed to have a lovely life as she decorated it making it cosy to live in. As a talented illustrator, she worked from home, loved pink, wore beautiful dresses and drove a pink car. By this time I was really liking her and enjoyed being in her shoes as I took on her character and enjoyed all the things she was. The village she lived in was quaint with a bakery that made the most delicious bread and cakes. (And she didn’t appear to put on weight!) I found myself wanting her life. I wanted to be Rose, and I could. in the pages of this story.
Then she meet the handsome Rob Munro, who has fire in his eyes when his emotions smouldered. He was the Laird of the Manor, everyone knew him and his family. Abby, his sister, soon becomes Rose’s best friend. They have girly nights and days together and parties, one of which Rose becomes hopelessly drunk. She is a lovely drunk and you are there with her every step of the way. Both Rose and Abby enjoy a drink as they dance and flirt with all the men. They know how to have a good time. Oh the hangovers! I just loved it!
Now Rob, what a man – not perfect – he has a temper, but it only makes him more adorable, and the sex! That was fun, and I might add none of it graphic, most, if not all was left to the imagination, and the details, (do we really need to know?) are glossed over. Instead, words of love are used and I liked that, it was clever, considering they made use of every surface in the house!!
A number of times I thought the story was drawing to a close and each time my kindle said another two or three hours of reading left. What could the author possibly write about now? Rose and Rob were together and madly in love, Abby was also now in a relationship. There were lots of minor characters, all of which were interesting, not to mention an ex mad girlfriend or Rob’s. She is the crux of the story, the conflict that gives the book an interesting twist.
Sigh, such a great story, such great characters. I was the lady of the manor and money was no object. I, I mean Rose, could have her own credit card in which she was told to max out if she wanted. She had a manor house to decorate if she wanted. She could spend how ever much she needed to do that. Sigh. I can’t imagine my husband saying that, somehow.
I’m so glad I didn’t know it was a big book because in all honesty, I probably wouldn’t have read it. One of my favourite ever reads, and probably one that I will end up reading again.
