I realised this book is aimed at a younger audience (much younger!), so I had to adjust my thoughts and see it through the eyes of a young girl. I wouldn’t normally read a book aimed at such a different generation, but I knew from the writing style it wouldn’t be difficult to read. I even checked a couple of reviews on Amazon beforehand and they were good. Then the author told me if I didn’t like it, I had no need to read it. Apparently, she had received a lot of criticism on a particular website where they gave her unreasonable 1-star reviews.
That was unfair, no author deserves it especially when the standard of writing, the imagination and the cleverness of the book is as good as this one. One should never write a review on a book based solely on whether they like the story. I read for enjoyment and if I’m not liking it, I stop reading and don’t review it.
The Mathematical State of Grace is not your average book – the title tells you that. There were parts that gripped me and parts I skipped over, simply because it was hard connecting with young love at a time when everything is so new. A young reader would have definitely have delighted in it!
The parts that gripped me was the wonder of the author’s imagination. Grace and Vincente face a world where everyone has gone. Why where and how, are the questions that keep the reader turning the pages. I will say that although I thought the ending was very cleverly written, I didn’t understand it. It was also interesting to read something like that and shows that the imagination really knows no bounds.
