Since Amazon terminated my account – full story here, I’ve been investigating how easy it is to get books onto your Kindle. After all, that’s where most of us prefer to read from.
Isn’t it annoying that Amazon has the stronghold? I know people buy from other retailers otherwise they wouldn’t exist. So I needed to understand how it works myself to pass on.
Smashwords is not a place I associated with before. So, it was good for me to see.
Go to Smashwords.com and opened an account, if you haven’t already got one. You then get presented with this page.

I went for a free a book because this is an experiment, but I’ll probably read it anyway.
Unfortunately, when I went to the search bar and put in my name, nothing came up. However, I put in the title of one of my books and it came up. Having said that, you can still use the universal link from my books page or you might have seen a post on social media. Then select Smashwords from the icons, and it will take you there.
Make your choice and download your book.

Once you’ve downloaded it to your device, you should see option to ‘send to’. I seem to have a default of Apple Books. Probably because my device is Apple. But you can send your book somewhere else. Kindle, for instance.
You may have to rename it as I have done so it makes sense when you open it.

Yes, it’s more complicated than downloading direct from Amazon, but the more you do it, like everything else, the easier it becomes.
Let’s not give Amazon the monopoly.
Look out for my next Karen’s Chat where I will give another option of downloading to your Kindle.
