The Post- Apocalyptic Fairy Tale Book 2

My Review

I do enjoy modern takes on fairy tales, and I’ve read quite a few, although not for some time. Having recently discovered Claire Kent, this is the third of her books that I have read. As a lover of novellas, these are a perfect blend of genre and length for me.

In this Cinderella retelling, it is a stepmother and her daughter who make Teresa’s life difficult. She accepts her situation because she is not confrontational and prefers to avoid conflict, until it all becomes too much to bear.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, life is very different from what we know now. Teresa escapes to the city with no real plan other than to visit her sister, Annabelle, although she knows she probably cannot stay with her.

In the city, she meets Mason, who had previously dined at their house as a suitor for her stepsister. Mason offers Teresa a proposal she cannot refuse.

She needs to escape her stepmother, and he’s the only prince around.

Ever since my father died and my sister left, I’ve been trapped in a life of drudgery with a stepfamily as wicked as the storybooks say. Life after the apocalypse offers few choices, and I only have three. I can stay and be miserable. I can die in the wilderness. Or I can marry him.

Mason is the closest thing this village has to a prince. He’s odd and antisocial and doesn’t say a lot, but he’s got a good home and a dependable income. Plus, he treats me better than my stepfamily.

Neither one of us has any experience with relationships, but maybe we can muddle along together better than we have alone.

If happy endings in this world are impossible, then this marriage of convenience will have to do.
