A Man in The Dark By Mary Woldering

My Review

It’s the first time I’ve read a book set in the 1930s, and what a caper it is.

When Markus’s father is murdered, he travels across the country to uncover the truth and avenge his death.

As a vampire, he can extract far more than answers in this often grim and violent world.

The author weaves a tale that pulls you into the mystery of who disliked his father enough to kill him.

Life in America when the Big Easy was in its prime adds grit and atmosphere to the narrative.

There’s also romance with the beautiful, sultry Claire. Markus can’t stop thinking about the woman who he later realised had stolen his heart, but, like any good story, there’s a twist.

If you enjoy crime stories from this era with a touch of fantasy, this one may appeal to you.

Mary recently took part in Ghostly Rites 25, an anthology where we showcased our short stories along with others. I’m still reading it and now look forward to hearing more from Mary.

“He was not ready to go to rest!”

Markus Ilderton learns that his nearly immortal father has been murdered. Now everything in his carefree world—even his new romance—shatters overnight. He must return home to Mississippi to settle the estate and solve the mystery.

The year is 1931. The United States is struggling through the Great Depression. Prohibition and desperation inspires crime.

Markus steps beyond the reach of the law to uncover the truth of the execution of his father – a wealthy humanitarian in a world filled with racial division and vigilante justice.

Vengeance comes at a cost. What he discovers could destroy him and those he loves.

Footnote: this is the first time I’ve used one of my old photos for illustration. The man with the car is called Bert Cranfield from Rochdale in Lancashire. The photo was likely taken in the nineteen thirties, so although British, it fits the story.
