Karen’s Chat on Familiar Faces

This is just a silly little thing that has fascinated me for years.

Imagine a room full of strangers, except one of them is your family. They stand out immediately. Almost like they have a beacon on their head. The fun thing is that no one else can see it, yet it’s so obvious to you.

There was a TikTok trend where someone films a crowd as they wait for a family member to arrive.  We saw a sea of strangers wandering by.

Then suddenly the family member spots who they are looking for. That’s when the magic happens. Their face transforms. Their eyes light up and they break out into a smile. It’s kind of sweet and so endearing.

Another thing that amuses me is how two people looking at the same thing see something different.

A person comes into my house and see a strange room. To me it is totally familiar. We have stories for each item on display and it’s full of memories. Without that, it’s just a room in a home.

I recall after Covid, when we could mix again. We went to a restaurant for the first time in a year. Being around other people felt uncomfortable and odd.

We waited for our family to arrive. As soon as they did, I settled and relaxed into what made me more comfortable with faces I knew so well.

Families feel strong together. A unit that that is strong and safe. I once saw a teenage boy walking in the street next to a  man that could only have been his dad. The lad had a confident stride. He was invincible with his father next to him. I remember being like that, too. I knew my dad would protect me from anything. Being at his side made me feel confident and comfortable and he would deal with anything that came our way.

So maybe this post is more about families than familiar faces. Although, one encompasses the other.

Who is in your family? When I married, we had two children. Now that little unit consists of eleven people, including us. Life is amazing isn’t it?

  1. The older I get, the more I appreciate the importance of family. I miss my mom, no matter how many years go by. I was 20 when she died. She wanted so much to see her grandkids. I have cut back on my writing in order to spend more time with my kids, just in case I never get to see my grandkids. I’ve already outlived her, but nothing is guaranteed. Having those familiar faces around definitely makes life worthwhile.

It’s so sweet that your family unit became eleven people! At the moment, it’s my husband, me, and four sons who are now getting into their adult years. I feel very blessed.

  2. Family is everything. Besides my two kids, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, I have 33 first cousins and we are all close. I have many more second cousins, many of which are close to me as well. My face does light up whenever I see any family member. There were 130 attended the last family reunion and many couldn’t make it. (and that’s just my maternal grandmothers side of the family)
