My Review of The Dark Hours by David J. Gatward.

A Cracking Good Read!

The Dark Hours by David J. Gatward.

Crime thriller series, book thirteen.

Rating: 5 Stars

I’ve given all this series a five star rating and The Dark Hours is no exception.

There was no straight off murder and it was a long time before it happened. It comes when you least expect it.

I’ve seen this done in a previous story. The author sets up a a cosy scene and just as you get lost in it. Wham! It happens.

We have a vicious blizzard and snow storm, a lost boy, a murder mystery weekend, a violent break-in and a suspicious man who is obviously hiding something.

Our team of well loved characters are stretched thin as they each attend different incidents.

Although it’s well into the series, this book along with the others can be read as a standalone.

Highly recommended, my favourite one yet!

The storyline and excellent plot is this:

A murder game. A real dead body. Can he help a friend through a torrent of danger?

DCI Harry Grimm smells trouble brewing. As the Chief Inspector and his team prepare for a harsh winter storm, a call comes in from an old pal that a remote PI training session in the Dales he is attending has abruptly ended in a suspicious death. And while the gruff detective struggles through a blizzard to reach the crime scene, the residents of a nearby house come to a fatal end.

Questioning the attendees in a bid to narrow down the list of suspects, Grimm worries about the treacherous weather isolating them from the rest of the Dales… and his overdue backup. But when a group of strangers arrives in search of an escape from the savage storm, he could be opening the door to another round of murders.

Can he keep everyone safe when the rules turn lethal?

The Dark Hours is the chilling thirteenth book in the DCI Harry Grimm Crime Thrillers series. If you like gritty protagonists, clever setups, and drama driven by the elements, then you’ll love David J. Gatward’s multi-layered mystery.

My Favourite Bits

‘Embarrassing icebreaker games and a focus group or two? If I see a flip chart or a parachute, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.’ ‘Actually, I’ve a little surprise planned,’ Walsh said, tapping the side of his nose. Jameson wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole.

‘You’re looking for two things,’ Jameson said, then pulled his left hand out of his pocket and held up a finger. ‘One, you’re trying to find things that should be there, but aren’t. And second,’—He held up another finger—‘you’re trying to find things that shouldn’t be there, but are.’ The group fell silent.

With the pistol now firmly pinned against his assailant’s stomach, Harry pressed on, driving the man backwards, at the same time striking him once, twice, three times across his face with his elbow, hard enough to break bone. He reached down with his right hand to join his left, gripped the pistol, and gave it a violent and vicious twist, into the body of his attacker, and up. The pistol came away, and judging by his attacker’s scream, so had the finger on the trigger, ripped away by the trigger guard.
