My Review of Fair Game by David J. Gatward

Starts off brutally, then evens out in

to a great yarn.

Fair Game by David J. Gatward.

Crime thriller series, book eleven.

Rating: 5 Stars

Another very different and absorbing instalment in the life of DCI Harry Gtimm and his team.

It felt comforting to settle into the now cherished characters. They are brought to life by the wonderful Aubrey Parsons who narrates the audio book.

The plot is about poaching, and the start of the book gets right into it with a brutal murder. Lots of grisly details and heart clenching moments throws you straight into the action.

This does not set the scene for the story. No, far from it. We still get the poetic descriptions of the countryside, which helps the reader visualise the stunning scenery. We also get the often hilarious banter between the team, which is possibly my favourite part. It’s such a great reflection of British humour.

The plot moves to something much bigger and darker than poaching. As the investigation progressing, and the clues come in, Harry Grimm is always one step ahead.

Eventually, the story draws to a satisfactory conclusion with a few twists I didn’t even guess at. That always makes a book entertaining.

We also see Harry finally make roots in the place he has come to love. Great story, great characters; highly recommended.

The storyline and excellent plot is this:

Trouble in the Dales. A brutal gang of poachers. When one of the unsavories is killed, can a DCI stop a river of revenge from overflowing with blood?

Detective Harry Grimm is reaching another milestone in the Dales. As he completes the purchase of his new house, his plans for moving in are disrupted when a trespasser falls into a grisly calculated trap and bleeds out.

Tracking back to a recent violent confrontation in a local pub, Grimm and his team assemble a long list of suspects. But when a principal lead disappears in a potentially murderous payback, he fears it’s the start of an all-out slaughter across his idyllic countryside.

Can he halt a killer stalking human prey before the butchery destroys his beloved land?

Fair Game is the electrifying eleventh book in the DCI Harry Grimm Crime Thrillers series. If you like steadfast cops, chilling clues, and gruesome puzzles, then you’ll love David J. Gatward’s suspenseful hunt.

My Favourite Bits

Sitting quietly in the passenger seat, Harry saw how what was left of the morning laid out before him was everything autumn should ever be, only more so. The fells seemed to stretch themselves out to the horizon, great slumbering giants of quiet beauty keeping watch over the lives played out at their feet. Their deep green slopes were bathed in mottled sunlight breaking through clouds as light and white as freshly whipped meringue.

‘Mr Walker, I’m Detective Chief Inspector Grimm, and this is Detective Sergeant Dinsdale. We need to ask you a few questions.’

‘Let me guess,’ Vince said. ‘Is it anything to do with me being stark bollock naked?’

The woman at the desk, whose smile was candy-coloured and played around her words like her lips were dancers or lovers even, picked up his passport and ticket. ‘Going away for long, Mr—’
