A Cracking Good Read!

One Bad Turn by David J. Gatward.
Crime thriller series, book nine.
Rating: 5 Stars

I didn’t think it possible to write a better book than the last. One Bad Turn is a superbly crafted thriller.
I really enjoyed this instalment. It was very clever and had a great twist at the end.
Gatward did what he always does and that’s to give the victim their own story. He makes you like them and then kill them off!

This book is also standalone. The storyline and excellent plot is this:
A murderous puzzle.
A compromised crime scene.
One DCI whose determination to nail the killer could cost him his life …
Detective Harry Grimm can’t catch a break. When his much-needed vacation is interrupted by a call reporting a decomposed corpse, he races home to examine the gruesome remains. Learning the young woman was tortured, he’s stunned when the peaceful countryside site explodes, destroying evidence and causing more death.
Uncovering clues from the victim’s car, Grimm struggles to keep up with a cunning killer when he discovers yet another body. But when the seasoned DCI examines the grisly murder and compares forensics, he’s alarmed when the patterns match those of a brutal drug dealer he put behind bars years back.
Can this hardened cop nab a wily crook before his own blood stains the picturesque dales?
One Bad Turn is the ninth book in the gripping Harry Grimm police procedural series. If you like high-stakes drama, wounded heroes, and unexpected twists, then you’ll love David J. Gatward’s thrilling cat-and-mouse chase.

My Favourite Bits
He asked if there was any other business, keen to finish the meeting and get on with the evening ahead. One which he hoped would involve a natter, a soppy dog, some good food and wine, and the company of Grace.
He roared then, the frustration of the past few days bursting out of him in a tidal wave of rage. It raced through him, burning his blood as it went, smashing his mind to pieces.
The dog was a joy, and though he would be very unlikely to ever admit it in public, he rather liked having her around, daft mutt that she was. But he just couldn’t help himself. He’d started off their relationship doing his best to be a firm and stern owner, yet the creature’s longing eyes had quickly pulled him in. Was he too soft? Yes, probably. Did he care? Not in the slightest. Smudge was a mad, furry, energetic bundle of I-love-you and Harry had a sneaking suspicion that she could bring a smile to his face on even the darkest of days. And though he’d had plenty of those in his life, he had no doubt that there were a few still to go through ahead of him.
