Welcome June with a Micro Story

Here is another tiny story, a quick bit of flash fiction where I sit down and just write without stopping. It’s not meant to be perfect, and I’ve kept it to how it was first written with very little refining. It’s amazing what can be done in twenty minutes. Let me know what you think.

The Light

I awoke in the early hours because something had disturbed my sleep. The hall of my bungalow now illuminated by the security light outside. The sound of the gate opening had woken me.

Sitting up in bed the light went off, only to come on again. I stared at the open door that led to the hall. The wind whistled through the telephone wires from my open window and gave the night an eerie feel.

A stranger was in my driveway. I sat rigid as the light went out and then came on again. My gaze flicked to my phone as my breath quickened. Should I call the police?

The hall was plunged back into darkness while I waited with bated breath. It didn’t come on again and there was no sound of breaking glass. Nobody was trying to get into my bungalow.

Grabbing my phone, I remembered the new security feature I had fitted – a camera at my front door. I opened the app, then paused. Did I want to see?

If it was something unsettling, then it would keep me awake for the rest of the night. If I didn’t check, then I’d spend the rest of the night wondering what was on camera. I opened the app.

My stomach lurched as I saw a man with a torch come through the gate and up my drive. Then it hit me. The milkman! It was the milkman! The shadow with a light on his head went up to my front door, and bent down, before going back out again.

I sighed, lay down and went to sleep.
