A Trip Back In Time at Car Museum

Here on Anglesey we have the Tacla Taid Transport Museum. They have some wonderful old vehicles that evoke memories of a time when all the cars were different.

In the early sixties we went to Scotland for a holiday in one of these Austen A30s. My auntie and uncle came in their Triumph Herald as shown below. ‘We’ were Mum and Dad, three children, myself aged 7, my brother and sister, 6 and 3, two foster children, 7 and 9, and our two dogs. Auntie and Uncle also had two dogs. It’s amazing how we all fit in for such a long journey.

The motorways were not in place in those days, so it took at least a couple of days to get there. In our car, there were two children and two dogs on the back seat, and a third child on my mum’s lap. I recall taking my turn and I also slept in the footwell. The other two children travelled into the Triumph Herald, along with my aunties dogs.

In the last image, you can just see a hole in the bumper. In my mind’s eye I can still see Dad cranking up the car to start it. He inserted a metal prod and turned it until the engine fired up.

We also came across a Chopper bike and I was immediately transported back to the seventies. My sister would be racing across the street on some imaginary mission. Near to us, four people were in a passionate discussion about the bicycles they had as children.

Tacla Taid is a wonderful place with plenty to see. All types of vehicles were there which people gathered around to chat usually started with – ‘remember when’,

Also included were these rides that used to sit outside many shops. We begged our parents for a penny to ride them.

Old fashions shops and a garage stand along one wall of the museum. The window displayed a bygone time that provoked a wealth of memories. It also had an outdoor stall that brought long forgotten items back to the fore.

Here are a few more photographs that may also spark a memory with you.
