My Review of A Canadian Werewolf in New York by Mark Leslie

Karen’s Review

What I liked about this book is that Michael, who is also a werewolf, has heightened senses in his human form. This really added something extra to the story and gave him the edge over other people.

It came in useful and was amusing when he attempted to rescue his ex-girlfriend’s fiancé. A woman he was still in love with, which made an interesting triangle.

I did enjoy the humour, particularly when Michael had his internal arguments about why something might not be a good idea. Often, he did it anyway and then had to sort out the consequences.

This is the first story in a promising series that has writer Michael changing into a werewolf during certain phases of the moon.

The climax of A Canadian Werewolf in New York was terrific with Michael on the heels of another wolf. All on the David Lettermen show and with some heart-stopping moments.

What I wasn’t too keen on was the wrong or missing words that threw me out of the story. Plus, there was a beautiful encounter with Buddy at the beginning. In a later scene, I thought the author had thrown in a very clever twist. But he hadn’t, and I couldn’t see what connection Buddy had with the plot.

For readers of this genre, this is a good start to a series. Just when I thought I had finished, Mark Leslie, the author, tells us how it started as a short story. That was really interesting to read as well.

Description

Michael Andrews seems to have it all. He’s a successful author and a minor celebrity living in Manhattan. It’s a pretty big step up from his humble Canadian upbringing.

Of course, his lycanthropy poses a bit of a challenge.

After waking up from his latest night of howling at the moon, he’s naked, he’s got a bullet hole in his leg, and he has a sneaking suspicion he ran into another wolf last night. A wolf that was stomping all over his home turf.

If he’s going to make an evening talk show appearance to promote his latest book, he’ll need to figure out what happened the previous night without letting his occasional heroics sidetrack him. Standing in his way are an agent, an ex-girlfriend, a variety of goons, and a fellow wolf encroaching on his territory.

It’s just another day in the life of a polite, small-town Canadian trying to stay alive in the Big Apple.
