When the black slaves are freed at the end of the American Civil War, Sammy sets out for Texas to follow his dream of becoming a cowboy. But his unexpected skill with a gun gains him a reputation he did not seek, and soon he must choose between two paths in order to win the woman he loves.

Where did the idea for the story come from?

When I was working with Sammy Davis jr. at the Flamingo Hotel in Vegas. He practiced his guns backstage and told me that if ever wrote something where he could use his guns, he would make me a millionaire.

Former slave wants to become a cowboy but through circumstances becomes a fast gun.
