Karen’s Magic Review

The author contacted me to say she had a new book coming out at the beginning of December and as I had read her previous one, Befriended would I consider reading this one.

I hate the pressure of being asked to read a book, it takes away the pleasure of reading when I feel I must. So I said that I would buy it and read it in my own time. That way I can please myself. As I don’t know the author, only see her occasionally on Instagram, if I didn’t like it, I could just leave it.

However, this was not the case. Perhaps I’m too wary. The first scene was a girl trapped in a cave and about to be rescued. So I naturally assumed she and her brother had gone caving, something happened, he got out, but she wasn’t able to. A rather nice rescuer came along to talk her into moving because she was so terrified she was stuck in one position. The story then jumps back to a few years earlier, to where, I assumed, we would learn about what happened, and what led her to this place.

First lesson, never, ever assume anything. She is not caving. The story begins to unfold and she meets a guy and you know its not just the casual meeting that Lauren assumes it is.

The scene that stays with me is when she is sitting in a bar with a friend having drinks and a laugh when she gets a text from her boyfriend asking where she is and demanding she go home. She defies him because she is having a good time, but from then on the evening goes downhill as she worries about what will happen when she gets back and what trouble she will be in, and what he will do.

This really isn’t a story of an abusive relationship, it is much more than that. It’s a story of courage and hope and a lot of twists.

A great thriller, I’m pleased to say and I’m so glad I read it. I hope you do too, and if so, please leave your comments, so we can talk about it.
