Wow! Sarah Colliver is a new-to-me author, and I’ll definitely be reading more of her work. Not only does she write a compelling story, but many of her books are novellas—perfect for those of us who enjoy a shorter, satisfying read.
This is also the first time I’ve read a book centred on the French Resistance during World War II, and I found it fascinating. Kitty Taylor is a fantastic character—brave, determined, and easy to root for. With an English father and a French mother, she speaks fluent French and volunteers to be air-dropped into France to assist with the war effort.
I can’t quite put into words what a good read this was. It isn’t overly graphic, but it doesn’t need to be. The quiet tension of living in a French village under German control is chilling enough. Kitty witnesses some terrible things, and what isn’t shown is often spoken about in a way that is truly horrifying. Of course, what makes it even more unsettling is that it’s based on real events—these things actually happened.
I love novellas, and at 145 pages, this was the perfect length. Sarah Colliver is a talented writer, and I’ll definitely be exploring more of her titles.
