Left for Dead by David J. Gatward

DCI Harry Grim Crime Triller – Book 25

I listened to this as an audiobook, with the now familiar and wonderful narration of Aubrey Parsons.

The story begins with the victim, although I didn’t realise that’s who he was until later. The author has started several books like this now. He cleverly lets the reader get to know the victim first, just enough for us to form an opinion of him. My heart was in my mouth when I realised there was no getting out of the situation and that he would die.

What changed in this book, which I really enjoyed, was that Harry, the main detective, had some downtime. We see him stretching out by the warmth of the fire with his dogs at his feet before falling into a well-deserved slumber. This made him, and the story, feel more real, especially considering how these detectives often seem to work 24/7.

The story itself was a terrific whodunit. As usual, I didn’t guess who the culprit was. In fact, I didn’t want to. I prefer not to second-guess and just let the story unfold.

I also enjoyed the minor characters and the humour that ran throughout the book. I laughed out loud at times, and that always adds joy to a story.

The clever author also had a small storyline slowly unfolding in the background. I know that hasn’t fully come to light yet. The next book has already been revealed, and I suspect it will continue there too. Either way, I’m sure it will come to an interesting head.

If you’re looking for, or enjoy, a good crime series, I cannot recommend this enough. If you don’t want to read the whole series in order, as I have, you can easily pick one or two, as they work well as standalones.

A cold winter morning. A body hanging from an arch. Can Grimm crack the case before more victims are Left for Dead?
After his recent engagement, DCI Harry Grimm should be enjoying his new role as a fiancé, but dark shadows threaten the Yorkshire Dales. In the quiet village of Appersett, a body is found dangling from the viaduct.

The victim? An experienced climber, once on the mountain rescue team, now living as a recluse on a lonely hill farm. So how did he end up dead on Appersett Viaduct? Grimm’s instincts tell him this isn’t an accident. The victim isn’t dressed for the weather, and curiously, his bootlaces are missing …

As the investigation unfolds, a second body is discovered in the icy depths of the Buttertubs, followed by a third in a long-forgotten mine shaft. With chilling connections forming between the victims, Grimm and his team rush to piece together the puzzle before more lives are lost.

Left for Dead is the tense twenty-third book in the DCI Harry Grimm Crime Thrillers series. If you like characters who refuse to back down, twisty plots that leave you dangling, and tranquil countryside settings, then you’ll love David J. Gatward’s gruesome adventure.
