What makes Rusty and Kristy tick?
The hero of THE COWBOY’S COUNTRY CHARM is Rusty “to the rescue” Russell. Rusty left the air force para-rescue unit after ten years of service. He finished up his college degree and is waiting to hear about his application to the police force in his hometown when the story opens. In the meantime, he’s helping out his sister, June, with her floral business.
Rusty’s blind spot is his need to step in and rescue people, whether they need rescuing or not. And it’s not just because he was in the para-rescue unit. This need goes deep into his childhood after a tragic incident occurred. This need is actually the reason why he chose the para-rescue unit for his military career. Unfortunately his need to rescue people means he often inserts himself in situations where he’s not really needed and sometimes this ends up complicating things. And the fact that he hasn’t always been able to save someone who did need rescuing, haunts him, giving him recurring nightmares. He knows he has some form of PTSD and this is why he doesn’t feel he deserves or can have a serious relationship with any woman. So, he opts for casual, brief relationships that are unfulfilling but safer.
Kristy Winslow has a need to prove herself, especially to the doubters in her circle which is mainly and importantly her father. Sam Winslow wants what he thinks is best for his daughter–and that is a lucrative career under his tutelage. Since her father doesn’t respect Kristy’s career choice to be an event planner (which her father doesn’t consider a career at all) and she’s just ended a serious relationship with a guy who cheated on her, Kristy has taken her boss up on an offer to start a new branch of the business in a region removed from her home base of Cheyenne, Wyoming. But, like anyone who lacks the backing and approval of an important person in their life, her confidence waivers at times. To be sure she succeeds, she’s going to put 150% effort into making this branch a success and she will let nothing distract her from that goal. Particularly the handsome cowboy who enters her office representing his sister’s floral business. No matter how charming he is. No matter how attracted she is to him. No matter that he’s offering a no-strings-attached casual fling.
