It’s a question for readers – I’m just beginning to recognise this phenomenon. It’s happened right now with the book I’m currently reading.
I can be reading a good story, but at a certain point, find myself looking at the page count wondering how long I have left to read. It can even be at an action point and always when I’m far into the story,
Is it just me? Does it happen to you?
There is an exception that immediately comes to mind – Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike books. If it was logical, it should happen there because they are huge. But it doesn’t. Weird, right?
Maybe that’s why I don’t generally read large books. I prefer a page count under 300, but will read up to 400 if it’s something that leaps out at me.
Maybe it’s just one of my funny reading habits. How about you?

I’m not sure if you read or have seen the comments to this post.
If not, apparently it is a thing that does happen, in other words it isn’t just a ‘me’ thing.
It’s actually called a Sagging Middle and there is a great article to help you when you are writing. Thank you Sahara Foley got pointing this out.
Actually, this is something a developmental editor would catch. It’s also called a ‘sagging middle’. https://writershelpingwriters.net/2019/05/saggy-middle-use-conflict-to-nip-and-tuck-it/

That’s interesting. I thought it was just a ‘me’ thing.
