I listened to this as an audiobook, beautifully narrated in a soft, lilting Scottish accent that suited the story perfectly.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a historical drama, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Isa’s story is a poignant one—life deals her some cruel blows in a society marked by poverty.
The supporting characters also bring depth, each with their own tale to tell. Set against the backdrop of the North Sea and a remote island, the story has a natural charm that draws you in and makes you care about their struggles and triumphs.
It reminded me of the old Catherine Cookson novels, though in a different setting. If you love sweeping sagas with realistic characters and challenging circumstances, this is a book you’ll enjoy.

Absolutely heartbreaking story of a young girl’s journey into the unknown. Dismayed by her father’s decision to emigrate to Canada, fifteen-year-old Isa Muirison gives up her comfortable life for the love of a penniless whisky runner. Defying her parents, she follows Davie to his tiny island home where she is met by fierce hostility from his mother and his childhood sweetheart, Chrissie. Alone among strangers, Isa’s unrelenting determination fights to gain acceptance and popularity in the close-knit community. But no one could have foreseen the tragedy that rips the heart out of that community and shatters Isa’s security. Meanwhile, Chrissie has found solace in the arms of Davie’s violent brother Jack, only to discover a darkness in his soul she could never have imagined. Events are set in motion over which the two women have no control. Will either of them ever find peace? Will Isa ever reconcile with her parents? In whose arms will Davie find solace? Debut novel from the pen of award winning author, Catherine M Byrne.
