I saw the box set advertised on Facebook but didn’t want to commit to the whole thing in case I didn’t like it. Luckily, I found the first book by searching the author’s profile and discovered it was available on KU as well – a bonus.
Overall, I enjoyed it. A group of prisoners who were ex-military find that their cell opens unexpectedly.
When they finally get outside, they discover the world has changed. It’s now filled with animal-like monsters that have killed most of the population.
I liked the concept, and the plot was strong. There were several main characters, and we got to see the story from each of their perspectives. They were likeable men and women who picked up others along the way. There was a great sense of camaraderie, and they faced some perilous situations, which kept me gripped.
However, I found the author used “he” or “she” too often without enough clarity, leaving me unsure at times who was speaking. Paragraphs that should have focused on one subject or one character’s point of view often didn’t, which made parts of the story confusing.
Although I enjoyed the plot and the characters, I won’t be continuing with book two. Had the writing been clearer and the errors fewer, I might have.

Book Blub
When a small group of ex-military prisoners emerge from a maximum security prison, the world had already ended. But can they survive what comes next? In a remote part of the New Mexico desert, all the cell doors in a high security military prison open. Zach, Abbey and other prisoners at first believe they are being tested, but soon realize the world around them has changed and the human race is fighting to survive.
My Favourite Bits
“So how long you been in here?” Abbey said with urgency looking at Ray, while her eyes glanced at Zach.
“Since the early eighties.”
“Wow, how you not crazy?” Ray smiled. His breathing seemed to slow down. “Maybe I am, and I never left my cell.”
“So what’s the plan?” said Jacob in a steady tone of voice.
Brad could be heard opening and closing cupboards, muttering to himself.
“You mean apart from stay alive in this world that no longer wants us?” said Michael.
