An amazing anthology filled with wonderful stories—a unique collection of short fiction, flash fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.

The book contained some real gems. Many made me pause and reflect, while others sparked my

imagination. There were so many favourite moments—ones that will stay with me for a long time.

What makes this book truly special is that the authors range in age from seven to eighteen. The writing is superb, and in only a few cases could you guess the author’s age—not from the quality of the writing, but from the innocence that shone through. That in itself was refreshing and a lovely reminder of how simple life can be.

I do have a favourite story—just my genre and the longest in the book: Zombie Apocalypse. Post-apocalyptic fiction is a personal favourite of mine, and this one was especially well written by several of the young authors. I’m full of praise for their ability to produce such entertaining and imaginative work

What’s the book About?

The World You Gave Us is an exciting and imaginative anthology of poems, flash fiction, short stories and creative non-fiction written by the young people who attend writing clubs with Chasing Driftwood Writing Group.

Over the course of a year, the children who attend our clubs were offered the prompt of ‘the world you gave us’ and invited to write poems, stories and non-fiction based on this theme.
Their responses could be real, reflecting their own thoughts, feelings and experiences of living in the world today as a young person, or they could be entirely fictional.
From dark tales of bad and apocalyptic worlds, to optimistic pieces reflecting their love and hope for this world, this anthology has something for everyone.

What kind of world have we given our children?

Let them tell you.

Lots of Favourite Bits

‘Now all we have is a broken planet, And even that has turned against us.’

‘The police say it was a dog that killed them, while the FBI say it was a murder and the CIA say it was heart attack. I think it was suicide.’

I brush my teeth in the crystal clear pool and start up the fire. I know Alice will be happy to wake up to a ready-cooked breakfast. Humming happily, I crack an egg over the frying pan. Alice pushes her way outside, drawn out by the aroma of sausages.

‘“What’s the problem, dearie?” she asked him. “Is it possible to change me into a human boy, please?” Stewart begged the witch. “Of course! It’s what I do!” she answered. “Holka polka rotten roy, turn this monster into a boy!” she shouted.’

It had a sinister smile, being much wider than the normal person’s mouth. It’s eyes were empty, it did not have pupils. And although it did have many similarities to a person, it did not seem completely human.

Though not even thinking about it, instead of using my phone, I communicated with my family. I think that it is more and more common now to see people constantly are on their phones, even when they are around people they actually care about. I see people walking down the street glued to their phones, and that’s bad enough but it is worse when you see that they actually have a friend with them and they’re still on their phone.
