Corpse Road by David J. Gatward

Brief Description – crime detective series set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

I’m now on the third book of the series and feeling comfortable with DCI Harry Grimm and his team now. It has a slightly unusual set up as they don’t have a police station. Instead they have rooms in the Community Centre. That’s because the village is so small and the nearest police station to hold prisoners, is in Harrowgate.

Corpse Road is a real place, but, as the author explained at the back of the book, he used a little poetic license. He took an element based somewhere else to enhance the story. It really worked. I believed every word. It is also the place of the first gruesome murder.

We were given a lot of information on the victim before she died. As I read further, I understood why it was necessary. As I knew her back story I didn’t want her to die because she’d been through a lot and I liked her.

There was one more nasty murder, it was horrific for our team to deal with. The end was nail biting as everything came to its peak. I was on tenterhooks as the book reached its thrilling conclusion.

The author still loves his exceptionally long sentences, which seems to be his style.

I loved the food references and the humour around it and the drinking of tea. Cake and cheese have become amusing each time I read about it. A delicacy I’ve never tried, and not likely to as I don’t eat fruit cake.

This is such an enjoyable series. Harry Grimm is great, I love his bluntness. I also loved the references to his build and his scarred face. The food references, as mentioned, the humour between the team and with their recognisable quirks all brought the story alive. Best of all I loved the descriptions of the beautiful countryside they lived and work in.

I particularly liked this quote. Doesn’t it sound magical. (A beck is another name for a stream and commonly used in the north of England.)

I hundred percent recommend this series if you enjoy crime novels. Grimm will get under your skin too.

Blurb

Picturesque hills stained with blood. An MO like no other. Can this senior officer draw on his paratrooper past to catch a twisted mind?

DCI Harry Grimm is still grappling with the Yorkshire Dales custom of eating cheese with cake. But the seasoned big-city cop has more than enough experience getting pulled out of bed in the middle of the night for the grisliest crimes. So the gruesome early-hour discovery of a woman’s savaged remains on the bleakly beautiful terrain has the detective keen to slam an ugly killer behind bars…

With both a clear motive and an obvious offender firmly in his sights, the dedicated policeman hunts relentlessly for the killer. But when the prime suspect goes missing and Grimm reworks the scene, he fears he sees signs of meticulous military planning and a culprit with a long list of victims.

Can the tough investigator get into the head of a murderer before he’s called to the next kill zone?

Corpse Road is the mesmerising third book in the DCI Harry Grimm crime fiction series. If you like razor-sharp cops, insanely bent villains, and dark page-turning plots, then you’ll love David J. Gatward’s wild ride through the moors.
