My Review – The Day the Earth Turned – Spring by Chantelle Atkins

I’ve reached the final instalment of the series and what a finale. It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey into the end of the world where all the adults have died leaving the children in charge.

I found the story to be moving, challenging, dark, and simply brilliant. The children from book one have grown and learnt to cope in the scary new world where the earth has claimed it back through nature and the animals.

The foliage and trees are growing at an incredible rate obliterating houses and roads, bridges and car parks. The animals have more intelligence than before. Some are grateful to live without fear, while others just hate humans.

This is the story of a group of teenagers and youngsters who learn to live in the new world and with each other. There is laughter, a lot of tears, infighting, horror stories, and tales that warm your heart and restore your faith in human nature.

I’ve said it before, but Chantelle Atkins really is a genius to tell such a story and evoke the emotions and feelings that rise to the fore as the story progresses. There is much truth here about the world we live in today. It’s not only the climate change, but of loving one another without fear. To reach this moment requires a lot from the children and as a reader we can learn from them, too.

Overall, this book is superb. I loved the truth that lay under the fiction. How we all can recognise traits within ourselves and the way we live on the planet beneath us.

They might be young protagonists, but the subject matter is very grown up. I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read.
